Britney Spears’ “5150″ Redux
I’ve already wrote a previous post on Britney Spears’ first “5150″ mental evaluation and my opinion on the events that led to her first trip to the hospital. Now, she’s being held on another mental hold in less than a month.
UTF fans, this entire situation is just beyond sad and no longer funny. I use to laugh at many of Spears’ antics prior to her first 5150: her odd and frequent trips to gas station bathrooms, her compulsion to visit drug stores in the middle of the night, and the infamous “comeback” tour that she launched last summer that led to her “MTV performance” last fall. Of course, like everyone else, I knew that something was wrong with her. And even though I laughed at her antics, I never wished ill upon her or anyone for that matter. I’ve been telling friends and family whenever the topic of Spears came up that she needs to get professional help from a psychiatrist. It looked like she was finally going to get the help she needed with her first trip to the hospital in January, but unfortunately, she was released way too soon. Therefore, I’m not surprised that she’s back in again. Hopefully, this time they will keep her the entire 72 hours and beyond that. She needs help, and she needs it on a continuous basis.
On a side note, the rumor is that Spears has a severe bipolar disorder. I’m not surprised. In fact, there are an uncanny amount of famous artistic types who have bipolar. Obviously, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana fame, Linda Hamilton of “The Terminator” movies, and even Vincent Van Gogh are some of the more recognizable names who were diagnosed with bipolar. So, if Spears does have bipolar, there’s nothing for her to be ashamed of in seeking help and medication.
Personally, I am close friends with a talented guitarist who has a mild bipolar disorder (in comparison to Spears), so this story hits close to home for me in a way. I’m well aware of the manic highs and manic lows that people with bipolar can go through. It can be emotionally draining dealing with someone who has the disorder; I speak from experience, especially when the lows hit. However, the key is to be there and support that person whenever they need you. My friend doesn’t always take his medication (he’s on Lithium), and I often remind him to do so whenever I speak to him, especially if I sense a manic low coming on or even if he’s too hyped up. The point I’m making is that I have seen the low side – the feeling of worthlessness and despair and even the suicidal thoughts. It’s not pretty, but if you care about someone, you will be there for them during the highs and the lows.
I hope Spears’ family and real friends give her all the love and support she needs to get herself together. I’m no fan of her work, but that doesn’t have anything to do with compassion, which I do have for her. Spears is obviously in a lot of mental and emotional pain right now. I hope and pray she finally gets the help she so desperately needs.
